Intermediate and Advanced Watercolor Classes at ARThouse—Fall 2010
“Developing Art Professionalism and Independent Study”
I will be teaching watercolor classes for adults (16 and up, with classes every other week) at my studio, ARThouse, during Sept, Oct, and Nov, 2010. The theme of the 6-session course will be “Developing Art Professionalism”. During the first hour of each 3-hour class, I will give a talk or demonstration regarding something a serious artist would want to know in order to succeed in the art field. Some of the topics to be covered include:
· Entering juried shows and competitions: Where are they held? How do I get in? What do I need to consider? What should I paint?
· Photographing your artwork: What is the best way? How do I deal with the digital image on the computer? How do I burn a disk to send to a juried show? How do I print out my paintings for record keeping?
· Collecting photographic reference material: How can I get the best shots? What kind of photograph can be translated into a good painting? How can I use Photoshop to crop or enhance my images?
· Matting and framing your art: Aesthetics of matting and framing; actual process (we will cut some mats and assemble some frames); strategies for do-it-yourself
· Writing an artist’s statement and biography: We will look at some examples and write our own
· Putting on a show: Where can I have a show? How can I publicize it? How do you sell art?
During the second two hours of each class, students will work in class on their own paintings! This is the “Independent Study” part. The goal will be to create paintings independently that can then be submitted to a juried show. Most juried shows require that the work be original in concept and execution—i.e., you have to decide what to paint, come up with the subject matter yourself, and figure out how to make it into a painting yourself. I will not be demonstrating watercolor in class or helping you paint your painting. However we will have group critiques at the beginning or end of each painting session, and your fellow artists can give you their opinion and advice. If you don’t feel you can work independently, then perhaps you should wait for the next course.
In the Tuesday night class only, I will work on one of my own paintings during the second half of the evening, and talk about my process. However, I will not give an assignment based on this demonstration, or give out any photographic reference material. You will work on your own paintings at home and bring them in occasionally for a critique by your fellow artists.
The schedule will be as follows:
Series of 6 classes (mostly every other week) for $160 during the following times: (you sign up for one)
Tuesday evenings from 7 – 10 pm: lecture, demonstration and critique only, for up to 10 students.
